Fun With Data

This was definitely one of the most challenging assignments that I have done throughout this class. I often found myself lost and had to work my way through the different buttons to fingure out what to use. Though this may not be the exact way that it was suppose to be done, I feel that I added my own touch on things (i.e. adding a bar to show average). I think that this long process creating this data map was rather tidious, however I learned a lot about excel and how it works. This is my Fun With Data!

Assessment forms

I never knew that you could create quizes that easily online, and also be able to grade them that easily as well. I really enjoyed the step by step process outlined on You Tube for me, because it allowed me to easily follow what was going on. I think that this program is very teacher friendly, and will be a program that I remember and continue to use. I think that the way that the program walks you through creating questions and has the format already mapped out for you is so helpful. This is one of my favorite activities thus far. My quiz goes along with all of the work I have been doing for this class, and thus is on the food pyramid! (<--- This is the link to my quiz, try it out and enjoy!)

Assessments Rubistar

This is an awesome app that will really come in handy when I am a teacher, that will enable me to quickly and efficiently create rubrics. My rubric deals with the essay question, "Is the food pyramid good or bad?"

Moving pictures

My movie maker presentation on the food pyramid . I really like windows movie maker because it jazz's up ones Power Point and makes it more interesting for students. Also with this program you can use a microphone and actually add your own opinion or information about certain slides.

Google presentations

My embedded presentation of the food pyramid into google docs . This program is great because it allows you to show a Power Point, even if the computer you know you will be using does not have Power Point. There are also endless things that you can do with google docs, and I really enjoy that everyone can edit and comment on certain projects.

Power Point Action Buttons

This is my Power Point show dealing with action buttons...the subject is on the food pyramid . This was one of my most challenging assignments, because it took me a very long time to create questions and answers for my jeopardy game. I also struggled when trying to figure out the action buttons, because I have never really experienced using them before. I feel really good about myself after completing this assignment however, because now I know more about how to maneuver around the action buttons associated with Power Point.

Create a Graph Classic-NCES Kids' Zone

4th grade NAEP reading scores

4th grade statistics chart

*When looking at this chart, one will quickly notice how close the numbers actually are on it. The yellow represents West Virginias state reading level of fourth graders, and the red represents the national reading level of fourth graders. Something that draws my attention about this chart is how WV use to be above the national average in regards to fourth grade reading scores. Though throughout the years the national reading score average has only slightly grown and taken a lead over WV reading scores, it is still a statistic that should be analyzed. WV reading scores have diminshed since 2003, as opposed to the national statistics regaurding reading. The national average reading score (though slight each time) is growing and will eventually generate a gap between WV reading scores, that there will be no return. Before this gap becomes too unbareable, strides need to be taken to improve WV reading scores, or it will be our own children that suffer.

8th grade NAEP reading scores

8th grade statistics chart

*As a parent, looking at this chart is very disheartening. I feel that the use of funds have possibly been used for the wrong reasons, and something needs to be done in order to address this issue. Our (WV) students are falling behind in reading which is one of the most important aspects in the United States. Reading is a part of every day life, and if our children read inadequitely they will fall behind all of the other individuals racing to be the best. I feel that the state has a right to see how money is being spent on education, to ensure that their tax paying money is being put to good use. If it is unacceptable to see where our money is being used and how, then it is unacceptable on our part to continuously shell out thousands of dollars. I am a concerned parent, worried about the future and well being of mine, as well as other children.

SoftChalk 4

I have created a lesson plan that is a technology based lesson, using the program I have just learned about, SoftChalk 4. You can also experience this program for a 30 day free trial by going to the website http://www2.fairmontstate.edu/users/rpierce2/Courses/LessonBuilder/.
I created a lesson about Black History in America and used a rating scale to assess students understang. I also created an activity to go along with my lesson that attempted to help students understand what prejudice is like.

Image Capture

Program I used: Paint
Dimensions: 640 x 480
Width: 640 pixels
Height: 480 pixels
Horizontal Resolution: 96 dpi
Vertical Resolution: 96 dpi
Bit Depth: 24
File Name: new image.jpg
Type: JPEG Image
Size: 54.5 KB
Acquired graphic from: http://franksblog.edublogs.org/files/2008/03/networked-teacher.jpg
Ideas for classroom: This program is awesome because it allows one to have an image and then edit that image. With this program you can add text, crop, color or really do anything to your image for teaching purposes. Also it can be used by students for presentation to highlight on important factors in their presentations as well.

Desktop Graphic

This is an image that I have created for the conduct of my class, in order to demonstrate freedom of expression. By showing my students that I am open and able to express myself, I hope that in turn will provide them a safe environment to express themselves.

http://www2.fairmontstate.edu/users/kennis/Expression.jpg

Truly this is the only option I considered when asked to create an image. I did not understand this assignment at all, and I just decided to do what I felt was what you wanted. I think that this template worked very well for what I am trying to portray and I also had fun while I was doing it. There were no real questions I had with the paint program, however I did wonder what other programs I could have created images on. I am sure there are all kinds, and they are on the internet and I have just not heard of them, but what programs could you suggest for me. Also the question posted about name 7 common tools for graphics programs I have no idea, and was wondering if I someone would be able to help me with this question. Overall I just felt really lost with this assignment. The file type is a jpg file and it can be opened by paint or a web browser.

FTP

Well I have had some experience with FTP before, however once I did not have Instructional Technology 1 anymore, I stopped using it. I did at one point after the class attempt to use it, but it didn't work =( This is my link to a picture of me and some of my friends using FTP. Hopefully this time around I will be more successful using it.

Specific outcomes include students:
1. use the classroom technology resources as a tool for higher-order thinking and personal inquiry.
I feel that this outcome affects me because since the world is becoming so technology oriented, as I teacher I too have to incorporate technology into the classroom. If I were to not know anything about technology I would not be able to teach my students anything about it.

2. design either web-based or multimedia presentations to showcase their research (e.g., information gathering) on topics that I assign in class.
I feel that I have done this to some extent, when presenting presentations via power point. Also because I did have Instructional Technology I have some experience with youtube and creating a picture story.

3. use our technology resources daily to access the Internet, send email, and/or plan classroom activities.
I do access the Internet daily, for different things such as; research, email, facebook, blackboard, etc.

4. create their own web pages or multimedia presentations to showcase what they have learned in class rather than preparing traditional reports.
Since we have created a blog for this class I think that this will serve as a good showcase of all of the projects I have completed and how much I have learned while taking this class.

5. use the Internet for 1) collaboration with others, 2) publishing, 3) communication, and 4) research to solve issues and problems of personal interest that address specific content standards.
I feel that I have already done this when trying to coordinate my units for other classes, as well as when performing group work, or even just when attempting to get ideas for assignments.

6. use different technology resources for personal or professional communication and planning.
Now that we have Skype that is a new and fun way to communicate online that I did not know about. I find this type of communication interesting because before this class I had never even heard of a program that could do that. Common types are aim, email, facebook, etc. however I feel that since I am in this class I will be exposed to numerous technology advances that will greatly help me in my classroom.
